“Symptoms that begin within 4 weeks of exposure to a traumatic event and last up to 1 month; an individual may exhibit anxiety and have impaired functioning in one area of life (e.g., work, family); symptoms may include reexperiencing the trauma (through dreams, flashbacks, reoccurring thoughts), avoiding stimuli (e.g., locations, smells, sounds, people) that may be reminders of the event, detachment from others and emotional numbing.”
